Directed by Pete Travis and starring Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby & Lena Headey.
I wasn’t expecting anything special when I originally watched this, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by this concise & energetic action sci-fi flick that finally properly honors the legendary Judge Dredd. The movie doesn’t waste any time on establishing the emotional state of the character and instead instantly jumps into fourth speed right at its beginning. The script, written by Alex Garland, perfectly highlights all the key aspects of the Dredd persona. The relatively low budget of the movie doesn’t show and the futuristic landscapes of Mega City One (filmed in South Africa) and the interiors of the Peach Trees Mega Block are beautifully shot, featuring some breathtaking slow-motion sequences during its many action-packed scenes. Bonus point for Karl Urban who personifies Judge Dredd perfectly without ever having an opportunity to remove his helmet. A very good, violent actioner in the vein of Verhoven’s Robocop. Highly recommended.
